To uncover the most effective yet underrated SEO tactics in content marketing, we sought insights from founders and SEO consultants. From boosting rankings with internal links to linking high-performing content to service pages, here are the top five strategies these experts have successfully implemented.

  • Boost Rankings with Internal Links
  • Enhance SEO with Content Pruning
  • Use Linking Out as an Opportunity
  • Repurpose Old Content
  • Link High-Performing Content to Service Pages

Boost Rankings with Internal Links

One under-used, but very effective, SEO tactic that made a big difference for one of our sites was to take our most powerful pages and add internal links to the pages that were stuck on pages two and three.

In other words, on all of our blog posts that ranked well in Google or had a ton of powerful backlinks pointing to them, we added internal links to all of our other important blog pages that weren’t ranking on page one yet. We thought we were going way overboard on how many internal links we were adding to each page, but then our rankings shot up on all of those pages without adding many external backlinks.

This tactic is so great because it’s very easy and free.

Enhance SEO with Content Pruning

Content pruning is an underutilized SEO strategy in content marketing. It involves frequently assessing your website to find and consolidate old or underperforming material.

By focusing your efforts on optimizing and upgrading high-value content, you can increase your site’s overall quality and relevance to search engines, which will result in higher ranks. Content pruning improves the user experience and ensures that search engine crawlers are effectively devoting their resources to your most valuable content, ultimately enhancing your SEO efforts.

Use Linking Out as an Opportunity

Linking out is one of the most underrated tactics when it comes to content marketing. Traditionally, most people are scared to link out, thinking it may negatively impact their SEO potential. In reality, this is not only not the case, but it also presents an opportunity to build more links and reach a wider audience.

Simply by reaching out to people you link out to and letting them know that your content exists, you will increase your chances of them both sharing your content and potentially linking back to you in the future.

Repurpose Old Content

One effective, yet underrated, SEO tactic I’ve used in content marketing is updating and repurposing old content. It’s not just about creating new content, but also making the most out of what’s already there.

By revisiting old posts or pages, you can update outdated information, add new insights, or even reformat the content to make it more engaging. This not only improves the quality of your content, but also signals to search engines that your site is active and updated, which can help boost your rankings.

Link High-Performing Content to Service Pages

Internal linking is super underrated. Many people treat each page of a website like an island, but in reality, the website is judged as a whole. If you have blog content that is doing very well and getting a lot of organic traffic, make sure to link that to products and service pages to help give them a boost.
